What Is a Rollover Budget? A Simple Example in Euros
A rollover budget carries a category's unused budget into the next month instead of resetting it. It is useful when spending is uneven: clothing, holidays and annual bills rarely fit neatly into identical monthly amounts.

How a rollover budget works
Start with the previous month's remaining category balance, add this month's budget, then subtract this month's spending. The result is the amount carried into the following month. A tracker that carries overspending too can show a negative balance; that shortfall needs to be covered.
Suppose you budget €100 each month for clothing. In January you spend €60, leaving €40. February starts with €140 available. If you spend €90, you finish with €50. March starts with €150; spending €170 leaves a €20 shortfall.
| Month | Monthly budget | Spent | Available at month end |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | €100 | €60 | €40 |
| February | €100 | €90 | €50 |
| March | €100 | €170 | -€20 |
Use rollovers for expenses that arrive unevenly
For a €600 annual insurance bill due in twelve months, setting aside €50 each month builds the full amount, assuming you start at zero and do not spend from that category. If the bill is due in six months, you would need €100 per month instead. Start with the due date, not just the annual cost divided by twelve.
This is often called a sinking fund: money reserved for a known future expense. A rollover category tracks the reservation. You can also keep the cash in a separate savings account, but avoid counting the transfer into that account as the insurance expense.
A budget balance is not a bank balance
Rolling a category forward does not move money or create savings. Your bank balance must still cover your planned spending and the amounts reserved in other categories. Before spending a rollover surplus, check upcoming bills and the actual cash available.
If a category is overspent, cover the shortfall by adjusting another category or reducing future spending. Simply resetting the negative balance can make the plan look healthier without changing the cash you have.
Choose which categories should roll over
Rollovers suit irregular purchases and planned annual costs. A category you want to review afresh every month may work better with a reset. Start with one or two categories, review them at month end and adjust the monthly amount when your plans change.
In Talvo, open a budget category and enable rollover. You can set a start month and starting amount. Unspent budget carries forward, and overspending carries as a deficit. Rollovers are included in the free Starter plan; bank sync is part of Plus.
