Monarch Money is one of the most complete personal finance apps in North America — the app a whole generation of Mint users migrated to. Collaborative budgets, net worth tracking, goals, a polished web and mobile experience. It deserves its reputation.
It also doesn't work in Europe. Monarch supports banks in the United States and Canada; its aggregators (Plaid and friends) don't reach European institutions. If your salary lands on an IBAN, Monarch can show you an empty dashboard and not much else.
Talvo is the European counterpart: the same idea — every account in one place, automatically categorised, with budgets and honest analytics — built on EU rails from day one. PSD2 open banking across 2,500+ European banks, euros and 20 more currencies at ECB rates, and data that never leaves the EU.
Talvo vs Monarch Money at a glance
Monarch details checked August 2026: Core $99.99/year or $14.99/month, Plus $199/year, 7-day trial with card. Prices and availability may change.
The dealbreaker, again: geography
Monarch's bank coverage runs on North American aggregation infrastructure. That's a hard boundary, not a settings toggle: European banks expose their data through PSD2 open banking, a different regulatory and technical system that US aggregators don't implement. Monarch cannot see a KBC, ING, Deutsche Bank or Crédit Agricole account — today or any day soon.
Talvo is built on PSD2 natively, through Enable Banking, a licensed European AISP. Every connection is read-only, authorised at your own bank's interface, and revocable in one click. Your credentials never touch Talvo's servers.
Feature depth: closer than you'd think
Among US apps, Monarch is probably the closest to Talvo in spirit — both are web-first, both take budgeting seriously, and both draw your cash flow as a Sankey. So for a European reader the real comparison is simple: Talvo is where you get that feature set with banks that actually connect.
- Budgets: Monarch offers category budgets with rollover and a “flex budgeting” mode. Talvo matches the essentials — rollover envelopes with custom start months and amounts — and adds mid-month rebalancing (“Move spending”) plus daily pace tracking with a projected month-end.
- Analytics: both apps have a Sankey-style cash flow view. Talvo's Insights page adds stackable filters (account × category × tag), merchant-level breakdowns, and a cash-flow forecast line.
- Collaboration: Monarch is strong on shared finances; Talvo supports shared budgets too.
- Net worth: both track it across all accounts, with manual accounts supported.
Pricing: euros, VAT included
Monarch Core is $99.99/year (or $14.99 month-to-month), with a Plus tier at $199/year, after a 7-day trial. For Europeans there'd also be FX conversion fees on every renewal — if it worked here.
Talvo Plus is €6/month (€60 billed yearly), VAT included, after a 7-day free trial — roughly half Monarch's price, in your own currency. And the Starter plan — manual accounts, budgets with rollovers, full Insights — is free forever, not a trial.
The short version: Monarch is arguably the best all-round money app in North America. In Europe it can't connect a single bank. Talvo gives you the Monarch-style experience — web app, Sankey analytics, flexible budgets — on European infrastructure, for roughly half the price.
Switching or starting fresh
Ex-Mint, ex-YNAB, or waiting on a Monarch EU launch that hasn't been announced? Talvo imports CSV history, auto-categorises it, and suggests budgets from your own 3-month averages. You can also poke around the live demo with sample data before creating an account.
